Advanced Manufacturing Leadership programme site visit at Caterpillar

Students from the Advanced Manufacturing Leadership Programme (AMLP), jointly run by Queen's Business School and the Centre for Competitiveness, recently visited one of Northern Ireland’s world-class manufacturers, Caterpillar (NI) Limited.

After an introduction to the business by Darren Anderson, facility manager, the management team then led AMLP Programme Director Julie McCandless from QUB and the students on a tour of the Springvale facility, Belfast, which produces major component subassemblies including axles and transmissions for Cat articulated trucks as well as other oil and gas applications.

William Ussher, Senior Executive CforC, said: 'This was a great opportunity for Team Leaders and Front Line Managers from local Manufacturing companies to see many Lean Manufacturing Principles deployed across the operation. The students and I were impressed by the operations management systems in place and the use of digitalization to link real time performance with people focused processes that facilitates adherence to standards, achievement of key performance targets, and fosters a problem solving culture. The commitment of all to safety and quality was evident throughout the visit. It was a positive learning experience for the students involved and a valuable contribution to the overall objectives of the Advanced Manufacturing Leadership Programme. Thanks to Factory Manager Darren Anderson and his management team for hosting a most productive visit'
